When Directive 95/46/EC (the "Data Protection Directive") was written in the mid-1990s, the highly-interconnected world in which we live today was merely a glimmer on the horizon. The internet itself was fairly new, there were no websites that emphasized user-generated content,, Amazon started in 1994 and was merely an online bookstore, Facebook just arrived in 2004… Consequently, the data protection practitioners had to adapt the Directive for years to a world it simply was not designed for.
